Lost Knight
In Glen Lonan stands the enigmatic monolith of ‘Clach na Carraig’ or ‘Diarmid’s Pillar’. This Bronze Age monolith or menhir is said to mark the grave of the Irish hero, Diarmid.
My sense of this stone is that it marks not the grave of one but stands for all the lost warrior knights who battled for the Hebridean chiefs. As a professional fighting force, they sold their skills and were often landless and unmarried. An expensive and elaborate grave slab was often the only way of leaving their mark and comment on their contribution in battles.
